Alright, it's not a drabble (oops) but it is hurt/comfort and cute, which is my favorite. Congrats again, hourglass!
Conner's got a highly sensitive nose, made doubly so because he's half-Kryptonian. He can track his packmates down from over a hundred miles away, discern someone's mood from under four layers of suppressants, and sniff out the precise chemical composition used to start a fire if so desired.
Your scent is his favorite. It's a combination of fresh linen (reminiscent of Hal's airy scent) and maraschino cherries (a sweet, edible note like Bruce's). On the days he finds himself suffering from sensory overload, he's usually quick to take you into one of your father's Red Sun rooms and bury his nose into your scent gland until the world stops spinning and his instincts quiet down. Until all he thinks, knows, and feels is you. Until you eventually coax him to come back out with your fingers laced in his.
Lately, your scent has been exceedingly bitter. So heavy and sharp that, loath as he is to admit it, he can barely stand to breathe near you. It's lucky that he doesn't really need oxygen.
There was an incident at a charity luncheon you'd attended on behalf of Wayne Enterprises. Conner was supposed to be your escort, but Superman was away on a deep space mission and there was trouble in Metropolis that demanded Superboy's attention. Instead, you went with two human guards and some low-level scent dampeners, confident that everything would be fine. The luncheon was happening in the middle of the day, in the safest part of the city, and televised on the news.
Barely fifteen minutes had passed before Zsasz, freshly escaped from Blackgate, derailed the entire thing with some stolen flash grenades and a knife. The brightness had overwhelmed you just for a moment, but that was all Zsasz had needed to kill one of your guards and lunge for your throat. His teeth had only just scraped across your mating bite, hardly deeper than a paper cut, when you had recovered enough to draw him into your shadows. You kept him there until the police arrived, then carefully deposited him into the back of their transport van to be shucked off back to prison.
Your family had been quick to get you home and examine you for any other wounds, but you were fine. Conner gingerly brushed his fingers against the bandage taped to your neck once he'd flown back, and that's when he first caught your changed scent. In all the panic of finding out you'd been attacked, he had stopped breathing; that first inhalation felt like a punch to the gut.
It's been four days since then, and while you still smile at him and get up to go tend to your cafe, you're clearly just going through the motions. Under the scent blockers, that sharp bitterness is still clinging to you as you puppet your body along. And under the bitterness, where Conner had expected fear or a lingering anxiety, he finds shame.
He doesn't know what for, but he knows it's unwarranted. So he does the only thing he knows how to do as someone with limited life experience, which is to emulate yours.
"Bruce?" Conner asks, shifting nervously in by your father as he sits in front of the Batcomputer analyzing data for his next case. Bruce grunts to acknowledge that he's listening. "Can I ask you for something?"
"The black Amex card is in my day wallet," Bruce says immediately, waving over his shoulder without a glance, "should be in my nightstand. I'll allow you to get it from my den if Hal isn't around to ask —"
"I don't need money," he quietly interrupts. Bruce drops his hand and leans back in his chair, spinning to give him his actual attention this time.
"Is it about Mouse?"
"Yes."
"Did you do something to them?"
"No. I want to do something for them."
Bruce hums, assessing the other alpha briefly, then nods.
"Alright. What do you want?"

You finish closing up shop with a tired groan, arming the security system and locking the doors with what little strength is left in your body. A gentle breeze cuts through the darkened Gotham streets and triggers goosebumps along your arms. You lean against the wall and pull your phone out of your pocket, barely able to pull up Conner's contact when another breeze hits you from the other direction.
The scent of warm sunshine makes your shoulders automatically un-tense and your exhaustion wane. You look up and shoot a smile at your mate.
"Hi," you greet. Conner grins back, opening his arms as he hovers just an inch off the ground.
"Hi," he echoes. "Your sexy ride is here, so please come aboard. No fare needed. Beep beep!"
You snort, wrapping your arms around his neck and resting your face in the crook of his neck. Conner secures his hold on you moments before your feet leave the sidewalk. His scent is comforting and unobtrusive, even this close to the glands on his throat. You'd live in his neck if you could.
The arms around you feel wrong, for a split second. There's deafening screams, and distant gunfire, and the thick stench of blood clogging your nose. You feel a bruising grip in your hair and around your waist, and the scrape of teeth against your throat. Instinct and muscle memory are the only things that prevented Zsasz from completing a successful challenging bite in that moment, the only things that saved you and allowed you to trap him in the shadows, but didn't save your bodyguard. If you'd just been a little faster, a little more observant...
You shudder and blink. Conner is floating on his back while you lay on top of him, rubbing circles with his thumb into your arm and gently calling your name. You can smell the concerncomfortmine he's emanating and focus on it as hard as you can.
Your face flushes with shame as you realize you'd probably been out of it for a little while, and you push deeper into his throat.
"I'm fine," you mumble, "I'm okay. Let's go home."
Conner brushes his nose against your temple, pushing out another wave of comfort from his scent. "Kay. Just a minute."
That's the last thing you hear before everything is drowned out by air. It rushes around you, simultaneously deafening and underwhelming. Your ears instinctively strain for the sounds of natural city life around you — cars, the train horn, whirring air conditioning units trying to stave off the mugginess of a summer evening — and only find the roar of the wind.
It doesn't last long. About a minute, as promised, before Conner is lowering the both of you to the balcony on the east end of the manor. Once you go through the doors, you can either take a straight shot down to the dining room and grab something to eat, or turn left and walk down the corridor until you reach your bedroom. It's considerate of him to have picked up on the fact that you're pretty dead on your feet. Walking all around the manor is tiring on a good day, regardless as to whether you've spent the rest of your time on your feet making drinks and food. You've no idea how Alfred does it without a whisper of complaint.
You step inside and turn left. Like a puppy, Conner walks just a step behind you. He places his hand on the doorknob once you reach your room, though, suddenly nervous.
"Okay," he says, "I did something for you."
"What did you break," you immediately demand. Conner blushes, but shakes his head.
"Nothing! I promise! Look — I know what happened a couple days ago really shook you. You're unfocused, you're quieter, and you haven't gotten cuteness aggression even once since then! I miss you chomping as hard as you could on my arm..."
He stops when he catches a fresh wave of your scent. Bitter and thick and sad. Conner quickly backtracks.
"I'm not scolding you! I'm upset that you're upset. I don't know how to make it better, but...I wanted to try something."
He leans against the door, fiddling with the knob a bit.
"If it sucks, that's fine. I can always run you a bath, or fly somewhere to grab you a treat. We can do anything you want, but, uh, don't get mad. It was a really great idea in my head."
You nod, gesturing for him to open the door. Conner stays still.
"I tried to get your dad to help. He seemed agreeable in the beginning and then he started laughing at me. I've never seen that man laugh so hard before. I can't tell if he was laughing because you were gonna beat my ass when you saw what I did, or what."
"Conner," you say, as patiently as you can muster, "open the door."
"In hindsight, I should've asked Damian. He was here earlier, but he seemed really busy with Raven, so I didn't want to intrude — BABE WAIT IT'S BAD DON'T LOOK I CHANGED MY MIND —"
His cries go unanswered as you slip into the darkness of your pocket dimension. You easily slide under the door and into your bedroom, then pop back out and brace yourself for whatever absolute carnage he managed to get into while you were at work.
There's a nest in your bed.
A nest you didn't make.
It's...
"Babe, I — ARE YOU LAUGHING?"
You are. You can't help it. There's a ridiculous pile of laundry on your bed, tucked into a haphazard, lopsided circle, with two blankets thrown on top. It's simultaneously way too tall and way too skinny. It smells overwhelmingly like Alfred for some reason. Your pillows are missing. Your top sheet has a hole in it. You can see a shoe poking out of one edge. A shoe you don't recognize, either, which means it's not one of yours or Conner's.
It's the worst fucking nest you've ever seen. You can't stop laughing at it. Tears are pouring down your face. Conner is beet red and stammering indignantly.
"Y'know, I tried really hard!" He insists, which makes you double over and wheeze. "I — I did!! I wanted you to feel comforted in a nest full of your family's scents and things!"
That's the sweetest thing he could've ever done for you, really. Alphas don't have any natural instinct to build or maintain a nest, except to ensure that at least some part of it smells like them, so the fact that he went out of his way to make the attempt really warms your heart. It's just such a shame it's literally so ugly.
You stumble to the bed and try to climb into it. One side of the nest immediately collapses into a flat puddle of fabric. You're laughing so hard you're worried you might vomit. Conner huffs and crosses his arms.
"C'mon, it was really hard!"
You lie down in the uncomfortable clothing pile and wipe your tears, beckoning for him to join you. After a moment's hesitation, he climbs in and cuddles you to his chest.
"....alright. This might be the most uncomfortable thing I've laid on," he mutters, which sets you off again. Conner can't pretend to be mad much longer, though. Instead, be smiles and nuzzles your cheek.
Your scent is sweet and tart again. His plan to cheer you up didn't pan out the way he'd expected, but he'd happily make a thousand more shitty nests to see you flushed and giggling like this.

An online service is scraping Discord servers en masse, archiving and tracking users’ messages and activity across servers including what voice channels they join, and then selling access to that data for as little as $5. Called Spy Pet, the service’s creator says it scrapes more than ten thousand Discord servers, and besides selling access to anyone with cryptocurrency, is also offering the data for training AI models or to assist law enforcement agencies, according to its website. The news is not only a brazen abuse of Discord’s platform, but also highlights that Discord messages may be more susceptible to monitoring than ordinary users assume. Typically, a Discord user’s activity is spread across disparate servers, with no one entity, except Discord itself, able to see what messages someone has sent across the platform more broadly. With Spy Pet, third-parties including stalkers or potentially police can look up specific users and see what messages they’ve posted on various servers at once.

Lhasa remains steeped in darkness, even though the stars at the roof of the world are beginning to fade as night closes its eyes. Sherlock carefully weaves in-and-out between the long-haul lorries in the crowded service area, moving towards the one that will clandestinely carry him to its destination in Shigatse, which will place him in the vicinity of a rogue copper mine. This improvised transport strategy allows him to slip surreptitiously from town, thwarting the restriction on international visitors that they be accompanied by guides anywhere they travel within the captive region. Careful to remain undetected, he slips through the back door of the attached freight container; once safely inside, he casts light from a pen-sized torch across the boxes, gauging how to arrange a space to conceal his presence.
The blend of noises outside the truck crowd in on his awareness, amplifying his sensation of confinement – snatches of conversation, mostly in Mandarin, random laughter and occasional shouts, the peremptory staccato of a horn, the groaning metallic scraping of engines downshifting, the crunching of gravel under moving vehicles. He sits down, pressing his back against the side wall, knees bent, his hands and fingers idly flipping and spinning the pen torch. After a few moments he stops, puzzled at feeling pulled off-kilter, unsure as to why. This moment, now, is just one more to get through, as are the moments to come over the next five hours, and then in however many days lie ahead. The waiting, the dark, the placelessness – these are all familiar companions; he’s practiced at tamping down his resentment, and meeting each of them with resignation. He allows his mind to drift, seeking to surface useful data . . . and when it comes, the result suggests an odd source -- the similarity of his physical position to that last day before he disappeared, sitting preoccupied on the floor at Bart’s laboratory, bouncing a small rubber ball, waiting for events to unfold. He rubs at his forehead, and exhales with an irritated huff, frowning, displeased that he’s let the memory intrude.
He disciplines himself to shift focus, to stay in the present, by mentally rehearsing the two major tasks he needs to complete today, barring any unfortunate developments that would require starting over. He’s here to neutralize two confederates of Moriarty's syndicate who work for a multinational energy corporation – the first is an enterprising engineer overseeing the digging of an illegal mining pit, the second an executive at the corporate headquarters in Lhasa, who is diverting impressive amounts of monies to the both of them. (Sherlock has no desire to know the whys of their circumstances – whether, in addition to greed, their actions are due to incentives, or blackmail, or outright threats; all he needs to know is that they’re beholden to the dictates of his enemy's network and any bounties they dangle, and are therefore a potential threat to himself if he returns, and to his friends.)
He arrived in the Tibetan Himalayas three days previous, but he’s had to wait impatiently to implement his objectives, betrayed by his body, waiting to gradually shed the debilitating effects of altitude sickness, in his muscles, his stomach, his lungs. He grudgingly admits to himself that the downtime, however, was probably necessary, allowing him to catch his breath in more ways than just the one that's so currently urgent.
The last fortnight had seen him – as Gabriel Vernet, a director at a French biopharmaceuticals start-up – in an unrelentingly tense journey in which he’d conducted business, fake as well as real, in Singapore, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Macau, and then through Sichuan to Chengdu for the flight to Lhasa. He’s been traveling on papers and an operative legend courtesy of the British government for this leg of his odyssey; while he prefers to chart his own course, unencumbered by the high-handed and condescending auditing of his brother, he had conceded to his better wisdom of seeking aid from London while being shadowed by ever-present governmental representatives of the People’s Republic of China -- as well as floating in and out of view of particularly vicious groups of gangsters operating in Southeast Asia.
His knowledge of Mandarin has been essential in keeping his forward movement going; it helped Vernet to facilitate cooperation from the sources he sought out, high and low. It also allowed him to expand his reconnaissance, especially when those on whom he was eavesdropping assumed that the sharply-dressed businessman within earshot was unable to understand their conversation. His anxiety spikes at deciphering the communique: emergency action needed, abandon the hotel -- which means he'll not be returning to the inviting bed, the soft pillows, the warm blanket. There is no indication of why, or of what comes next, other than that he’ll be met at the station by a man who will identify himself as a tour leader from the Council for the Preservation of Sacred Alpine Cranes, and that he is to reply in Mandarin that he was honored to have seen four pairs of the noble birds nesting safely when he inspected the field site.
Other than this terse instruction, he has no idea what he’ll find once he leaves the train, and whether or not he is walking into a trap. And as he gazes out the window at the dark clouds beginning to gather in the east, he sees that the weather may be turning against him as well.

The captain in the face of adversity, is not quick to admit when he has made a mistake. Not even when that miscalculation is widely visible and almost at the extent of great personal loss.
Send one. Send them alone.
Jim's no longer leaning in his seat, but painfully straight and stock still. The Enterprise was currently being held in place by technology that outmatched their own. They'd responded to a distress beacon and made contact with the cause. The species is not humanoid by any means, but spherical, almost like a rockface. No obvious eyes, ears, or nostrils. Just black canvass covered in craigs and valleys. It had made it difficult to read a body language. Harder to find inflection in a tone that consisted of scraping musical notes and high pitched screeches.
Now they wanted to parlay.
Often, his gaze had cut to Uhura who had done the best she could to piece the language together. Her fingers were still flying over her own console to document everything the universal translator had picked up, and attempted to improve their data before whoever embarked required it.
Spock was the obvious choice. It was too risky for Jim to go himself; and yet, when the time came to make the decision, to give the order, when they had locked eyes and the Vulcan could no doubt read him like the pages of a favorite story, he had faltered.
His lips parted slightly but no words came out. Just before his gaze cut downwards he caught the flash of anger - red hot beneath deep brown, almost black. The tightly formed line of lips pressed together and the slight raise of a left brow. His own read as the shades of grey coalescing in shame. The question was silently posed, but never outright voiced. Spock would never openly question him in front of the others, just as Jim had never openly held him back from fulfilling his duty.
The captain couldn't explain why he was doing so now, just that his throat closed around a premonitive sense of foreboding. Had he not failed to show the same restraint to Pike when facing the same request from Nero.
Anger had been an assumption because it was easier to bear than the truth. That it could have been mirrored concern. That grey was suddenly shot through and broken apart by the deep gold of determination.
It is no surprise then that Jim rises instead, straightening the cuff of his sleeve as he does. "I'm going. Spock, you have the conn." His tone is clipped, full of authority, leaving no room to be questioned. It is one he uses so infrequently, he feels the weighted stare of each member present settle between his shoulder blades as he exits the bridge.
No one attempts to talk him out of it as he makes his way to the shuttle bay. Perhaps they know it will be useless to try, but there is a collective tension as he goes through preflight checks and gives mundane orders. He does not say that if this goes south, the ship is to be evacuated, trusts Spock implicitly to put the needs of the crew above all else.
Jim knows they are watching the scene play out from the large view finder. Likely have his vitals displayed off to the right. Are listening intently to the open line he's left.
Until one by one, they all cut out.
The comms were the first to go. It started as static and light interference. Cutting out every other word. There is a startling shift in the captain's own tone, an undercurrent of panic, settling in to rage. The last transmission from the captain was a broken string of statements later pieced together over the loud background noise. "Do not follow...hear me?...Do not leave the ship....an order."
The silence that ensued was deafening.
Made worse only when there was a spike in the captain's heart rate just before that connection was lost too. Not flatlined, not a confirmed death, just ceased to exist. It could not be reestablished despite the best efforts, and all attempts to hail the enemy ship failed.
Then, it explodes. The Enterprise rocks with the force of it, but takes only minor damage due to her shields being raised.
In moments of true crisis time has a tendencies to do one of two things. It slows significantly, drawing out to the point of each passing second being felt. Or zips by like a rapidly beating heart. Blink, and it's been an hour. Inhale, another. Exhale, a day. No one moves. No one blinks. No one dares breathe as every set of eyes look to Spock in the command chair. Whether they are waiting for a command or a reaction is unclear, but the Enterprise is now free of the death grip that had previously been on it.
They are safe, but at what cost?
"Lieutenant Kyle to the Bridge." The silence is broken. The voice surprisingly calm as it waits then prompts again. "Commander Spock, we have the captain in the transporter room. We're, uh, sending him to medbay."
Sending being a misnomer for the sounds emanating from the background. Curses of the strong southern type, and the sound of protests and dragging. At a large crash, the communication is cut.
It is there Spock finds him. Tucked away in the corner, cordoned off by white curtains and away from prying eyes. It is the only semblance of privacy they will get until he is released.
Jim's hands haven't stopped shaking from fear, the rush of adrenaline, and the burns that start at the tips of his left fingers and snake upwards towards his shoulder, across his chest, and down his left side. The skin is dark, and angry, having already undergone one treatment. McCoy has told him it's going to be a process to heal the skin, likely needing heavy regeneration. Along with something like a damn barbeque. The rest of him is littered with cuts and bruises, there might also be some internal bleeding, it was all up in air at the moment until further tests were completed.
Jim watches Spock take stock of every single injury, but refuses to shy away from the scrutinizing gaze. The Vulcan's hands are laced and seated in the small of his back as he neither moves closer nor retreats.
"It could have been you." Jim says in the space between them.
"It should have been."
"No. Well. Maybe." Jim concedes, but sighs. "But if it had been you - " The statement drops off and he shakes his head. Refuses to complete the thought. His eyes roll shut as the possibility spills out across them anyways. If it had been him, if roles had been reversed, leaving Jim sitting in the seat witnessing what he'd just put the others through, he would not have stayed. He'd have been reckless and chasing. He'd have made things worse. In a way, he already had. "It doesn't matter."
Then softer. "I killed them all."
He feels Spock move, come towards him, but does not open his eyes as he continues to ramble. "It was us or them. I chose us."
Jim feels the press of him on his right side, the gentle caress of the tips of Spock's fingers at the back of his neck. Shivers against the coolness as he drops his forehead against the solid plane of his chest. Feels the nuzzle against his scalp. Feels the inhale of a scent warring between what he was and who he is now. Of the mint of his toothpaste that always seems to linger beneath the earthy ozone. Of fresh water springs cutting through mountain air. Of the warm sun as it shines across of field of grass. Marred only by the stench of smoke and sulfur. Of charred dead things and perspiration.
"You're mad, aren't you?"
"Anger would be an illogical response."
"And yet, I still feel like there's a lecture brewing. You'll have to get in line behind Bones, but I might have an opening this evening."

This really resonates with my stance on the call for artists to be more civil when people feel entitled to make demands of artists whose work displeases them.
We also don't owe people civility when the thing they're defending is openly antagonistic to our community, our rights, and our professional environment as part of its core function.
The current physical environmental costs of AI are also valid and imminently destructive so, it's just another a delaying tactic to say, it's not a bad as some things and on par with other things.
I do not care.
I'm no more required to argue on the terms of the person perpetuating or justifying the offense than I am to be gentle about it. If something's on fire, waiting to see if it was maliciously set before putting it out only serves the fire or the person who started it. It's destructive, it's dangerous, and it's already spread too far for comfort.
AI isn't like providing packaged food to people who can't cook. It's like food designed by creatures who just have one orifice for eating and secretion, and only recognize food as a thing you extract resources from. It doesn't matter what it tastes like or where it came from as long as it fills a hole and it's not the user's hole they actually care about filing.
Is something like that also nice for people who can't cook but still want food? Yes. However, treating that hole-filling slop like a revolution in expanded human capabilities in order to allow literally any business that makes food to fire their cooks and prep staff and replace them with cut-rate temps who will babysit The Machine to make sure it doesn't give the customer a salad of ethnic slurs, is shitty, disingenuous, and fundamentally antagonistic to the majority of essential workers in the food service industry. It makes thoughtful, healthy nutritionally relevant food too expensive for competitors to produce. It will drive the price of traditional food up for all consumers who don't want to eat bespoke forgery slop. If it looks exactly like what you, as a chef or line cook make but it costs 80% less, and you can get it on every corner worldwide, it's going to devalue your entire profession even if every bite actually tastes like candied styrofoam. It's fast food done worse, with more exploration, for higher profits for the manufacturer, bosses, the executives, and the shareholders but no one else.
Its fast, cheap, slop that you can have now, and you get to pretend it's yours because you told The Machine how many tits the burger should have, and don't know the people who now have to work two extra jobs because you think they were greedy snobs.
AI is a deeply self-interested, exploitative enterprise that converts stolen media into profit, and generates simulated expression as a byproduct. Exacerbating existing power disparity in creative fields is a bonus. They argue that it isn't theft because their training data was scraped from public sites but that's effectively the Stolen Land model of procurement. The original inhabitants may not have been exploiting its full spectrum of usefulness but the fact that you are and have been doing so without being stopped doesn't change the fact that all of your profits ultimately stem from theft and displacement.
I think approaching this exclusively from a copyright angle is also a bit of misdirection because copyright law is kind of a "masters tools" situation to protect the value of their investments from depreciation. That said, the harm of dilution in this context is also a very real harm and one recognized in courts. Courts that aren't packed with crooked shameless puppets, anyway.
Recognition is one of the most valuable and powerful assets an artist has. Giving everyone free run of the Counterfeit Media Machine blows a massive bleeding hole in that. People can do this by hand as well but it harder and we have pretty clear-cut remedies for the artist if the imitator tries to pass off fakes as genuine, or profits from creating visually indistinguishable material that negatively impacts the artists. AI can scrape an artists entire portfolio and create images the artist never would've agreed to, doesn't know about, and can cause irreparable damage their reputation on a heretofore unimaginable scale.
This is why so much of the Disruption Economy effectively boils down to scams. They profit from undercutting skilled labor, established businesses, and industry standards, relying on less, novelty, hype, and speculative investment to deliver a product that bleeds off just enough profit to tank a competitors ability to sustain operation. It doesn't even matter if the disruptor's system is itself unsustainable, as long as it outlasts the competition. The disruptor is now free in our Capitalist food chain to assume the niche of the predecessor, increase prices, reduce service, quality, and support, or demand to be bailed out if they find themselves in the red because they're the sole surviving provider now and failure means a vacuum. This is how monopolies defend themselves in the wild.
That last part is why they need to convince consumers that the purpose of their product is how consumers use it, and not what it does for their shareholders. By promising to level the playing field, democratize niches of privilege, empower the disenfranchised, and create opportunities for YOU, they recruit volunteers to hype up the brand for free (I fuckin SEE you over there Tesla).
They're always preaching the gospel of the future, where their sky pie has freed us from ossified elitism because it's easy to point out inefficiencies with established systems and win people over by pretending that identifying problems and fixing them are the same thing. This is why so many billionaires are pathologically long-termist. Their bread and butter is fantasy and it only has to work long enough for our money to land in their pockets. They use that money to defend the gravy train through lobbying, industry capture, and continuing to manufacture support by beating our favorite drum full of shit: marketing. It's an ouroboros of screwing people who used to make money before the next disruptor gets their turn running the exploitation factory.
We're fooling ourselves is we think they're above screwing the average user. Not just by charging for premium services, but by purposely cultivating an environment where you can't actually make a living using the tool they made for you. AI still sucks compared to professional creative labor. Its output just isn't consistent, controllable, or good enough on its own without skilled artists to fix it. Fun fact: they won't pay you artist rates if they class you as "quality control" instead. CEOs, owners, and studio executives want to replace their stubborn, inconvenient creative staff with programs that they have more direct control over. They need people to believe the tech raises them up to professional-quality work so they'll have huge pools of eager, replaceable staff with very little professional experience. AI needs you to swallow that hook too because these companies want to push paywalled premium features and railroad users into subscription access (we fuckin SEE you overthere, Adobe, Sony, Apple, Tesla again, Microsoft, Amazon, Twitter, Netflix, YouTube...).
It's the short-handled hoe of creative labor. It turns a cheap tool they bought into 3 cheaper ones they rent out. It lets you do what they need, but you have to stoop to use it, and they can take it from you whenever they want without much of a fight because you can't wield it against them in a way that really matters.
I say all that to drive home why we absolutely do not owe AI and it's biggest cheerleaders polite debate. Its purpose is what it does. Presently, what it's doing is placing even more power in the hands of management to be the ultimate decider of labor's value. It's equipping a pool of intentionally unskilled labor with nontransferrable skills to push out more competent and qualified skilled labor, and those tailor-made prompt jockeys will have even less right to ownership or fair compensation than the artists whose work was stolen to make the whole thing viable in the first place.
If someone independently decides to mark up our work, post it back to us and says, "Look, I just made your work better without you. You should have made this instead. I could do your job." That's disrespectful. It begs credit for a minimum of unwanted effort. It doesn't automatically merit a polite response.
The nicest I'd probably offer is, "Don't do that."
They're not my editor, my collaborator, my partner, my boss, or my friend. They may not even be my audience! People are free to consume things that weren't made with them in mind but demanding editorial privileges is ridiculous. Consuming hasn't bought them a creative stake in the game. Some may think the changes improved the work but art isn't a matter of public committee. They can't just declare what they've done must be OK unless it's universally denounced. That's what AI is doing while they lobby for regulation that validates their platform, secures their rights, and further insulates them from people they've already stolen from.
At best, when individuals do this they're just being critics, another job that can't exist without someone else putting in the time and labor to make something first. Generative AI lays claim to the sum of available media as research, pretends it's doing humanitarian R&D, then accumulates wealth and power by eroding the barrier of "people expect to be paid for their work". It's not science though. It's not research. It's not philanthropy. It's a product that's inherently hostile to labor within the industries it claims to serve. It does this on purpose and we know this because the people who built it said so it in messages they didn't expect anyone else to see.
People with power don't want other people to have more of it. They want the power others have to flow from them. If you then ask, "Isn't that what artists are doing? Then you are not actually familiar with how art works as a profession. It's a thing you can live on with enough of a devoted following but that following comes from your skill, your reputation, and your ability to market yourself. AI kills that. It's a predator that kills skill, wears its skin, walks around pretending to be the next evolution of human creative expression, and stuffs the saggy spots in its disguise with cash from people who believe that creative labor needs to shut up and be grateful for the exposure.
Shouldn't we be proud that people love our work so much that they want to make it perfect in their eyes?
No. Why exactly should I?
Why do the people who rip on us get a say in what should be validating to us? I'm proud to know I connected to someone though what I've made. Or when they see themselves in my expression. I'm proud if people want me to make their thing so much that they believe I'm worth the cost, or at least worth negotiating with. I'm proud if people see my work and respect me enough not to steal it, fuck it up, or show me its reassembled corpse as evidence that I did it wrong.
I don't have a ton of followers, influence, or much of a reputation myself, but my friends do. I would love to be able to support myself as working artist, but AI is going to close off avenues of opportunity for countless new and established artists. It's a cost cutting tool first and foremost. It does that by manufacturing its own evidence that, "actually this is really super easy lol." Any benefit to you as a user is secondary.
I see it like like a humidifier that achieves perfect ambient humidity but does so by converting tap water to tritium mist, which your landlord, in conjunction with the manufacturer, recover and sell. You get a few nice benefits from perfect humidity but you're filling your home with radioactive poison, contaminating it for future occupants, and generating value for people who will only reap benefits so hard that they can afford to buy their way of most foreseeable consequences.
Workers asking for fair compensation didn't make corporations act like they do. Corporations exist to insulate their shareholders from risk and they're increasingly seeing livable wages as an intolerable threat to being comfortable-bunker-rich as the world they've built starts to catch up with them again. They deserve something but civility ain't it.
AI people: we're just as much artists as you are, you gotta be so observant and go through so many correcting phases for the picture to look good uwu also AI people:
